Jason Pflaum is a Minneapolis financial executive who serves Plum Tree Advisors as its president and a senior consultant. Shortly before moving to Minneapolis in 2011, Jason Pflaum’s wife Jill was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and his family is a strong supporter of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, which is seeking a cure for this rare form of cancer.
At the heart of the award-winning nonprofit’s activities is the MMRF CoMMpass Study, which was launched in 2011 with the aim of creating a research base of 1,000 patients. These participants provide tissue samples at the time of their initial diagnosis and whenever their treatment is altered. This allows genomic profiles to be linked with clinical outcomes and patients’ specific responses to various treatments mapped.
At a meeting of the American Society of Hematology in December 2014, genomics data was presented as part of interim CoMMpass Study analysis. A key finding linked newly discovered genomic changes (rearrangements) to specific signaling pathways used by various genes. The aberrant expression of these signaling pathways informs the initiation of the disease and its progress.
